The Seoul Tower
I do like a tower … and ascending this one was part of a great day off here in Seoul, at the end of which I felt I had some idea of where I was fortunate to find myself. Here’s the view from the ground, but actually the tower sits atop a small mountain in the middle of the city, so at this point you’re already about a thousand feet above most of the landscape. There’s a cable car to get to this point, but we walked – a steep climb up the road … a tribute to my knee surgeon !

The view from the top is impossible to capture .. this hyper stereo shows the view to the North, and the cable car in the foreground, but it’s less than a hundredth part of the full vista … truly awe-inspiring. I felt very lucky to experience all this in the Autumn of my life !

Feeling lucky is a great treatment for depression. I was so so sad to hear of Robin Williams’ tragic suicide. He really touched us all … how awful that we couldn’t make him feel like life was worthwhile. Those of us who suffer from depression can learn … by mentally putting ourselves outside our bodies and asking what we’d tell the person we are looking back at. It’s a trick I learned at Cottonwood, Tucson, Arixona some years ago. But it ain’t easy. When you’re truly in that hole, nothing really works. You just have to believe that it will end.
RIP Robin. I hope you are smiling wherever you are.

In a rare moment of recreation ! Fom the Empire State Building.
Yes, my childish fascination with Hyper Stereos won over again. I have a strange feeling I did exactly this about 30 years ago .. I must go through my old Stereo Realist 35mm slides some day and find it.
But here it is. Baseline about 100 feet … one shot from each end of the viewing platform on the 82nd (?) floor of the glorious Empire State Building. Looking South towards the new and still unfinished Freedom Tower. The Statue of Liberty visible in the far distance to the right. And in the middle of it all (below and to the left of centre), the wonderful Flat-Iron Building.

And just so you can enjoy it in its full splendour, even though its sky-scraping qualities are now dwarfed …
here it is in a stereo detail from the same shot.

Cheers

FAREWELL DALLAS – LOOK OUT DETROIT !!!

Farewell Dallas. Fond Memories. Take care yo’all down there in Texas. (Hyperstereo)
One of my treasured moments from the tour. “Your Matches still light up the sky …” Now who said that ?!?
11th July, 2014

Amidst my chaotic thoughts this morning, my childish fascination with hyperstereos somehow never gets old.
Here’s a random handsome building – which just happened to be in my field of view when I woke up in a Dallas hotel room this morning.
Baseline between shots about 20 feet. So it’s a bit extreme – but I find it nicely distracting. Distracting ? Helpfully distracting because on mornings like this I am wrestling with my head – climbing that mountain back up to feeling in control and capable. Because last night in Houston, in front of one of the most wonderful audiences of our entire career, I felt unworthy.
So today I can’t look at the tweets – just need to refocus from inside and get back on the horse. I want those folks who come to rock with us tonight in Dallas to have the time of their lives.
Of course the band is well up to that, with our truly incredible new front man Adam. But I want to be back in this room tonight knowing I gave my total best.
Onwards !!! And I didn’t even begin to tell you about my fabulous day with the Space Travellers !

MOVING ON ! – QUEEN AND AL ARE IN HOUSTON
Moving on ! Queen and AL are in Houston. It’s warm and moist but the outlook is very good ! We get to play this great arena in about 20 hours time – the Toyota Center. There is a buzz in the air. A lot of great acts are coming through this year, and for me, it feels great to be in this world again.
See ya there, Houston folks ! Let’s Rock !

OK – if you’re free-viewing this in 3-D, or looking at it in its full stereoscopic glory using an OWL …. what’s going on at the centre of the picture? That’s the joy of sequential stereos (in this case, a hyper stereo, giving enhanced 3-D detail) – they tell stories !

GRATITUDE ON THE ROAD
We have a blessed day off in the beautiful city of San Francisco. This is a makeshift stereo view of the TransAmerica tower in the dawn light. But no photography can really do justice to the view from my window. I’m overwhelmed with gratitude to be ‘spared’ – as my Mum would say – to be part of this beautiful world one more time.

OK – I always did love towers. This one is an antique: the Calgary Tower, completed in 1968. Still works !
Here it is, viewed from the bottom this afternoon.

Day off ! I went up the this delightful tower … and, of course, felt the need to attempt a hyper-stereo view or two from the top.

I used the 3D Camera app on the iPhone, taking the left and right images one after the other, with a separation between the camera positions of about 20 feet. I also did a quick bit of post-production in Photoshop, to fine-tune the alignment, etc. It’s not perfect, but I have a show to do !)
There is so much info in a sequential stereo view ! You can see how the cars are moving … and the clouds make a whole stereo landscape of their own, because they too have moved between the exposures. The ‘hyper’ ness of the 3-D makes the buildings stand out nicely, as if we were looking at a model village in close-up. For some reason this never gets old for me. Hope you enjoy. For tips on viewing in 3-D please see _____
By the way … dear folks of Calgary … see ya tonight ! We shall deliver the promise !
Cheers

It’s an amazing feeling. All set to stride back tonight (Thursday) into the turbulent world of Rock .. in one of our old favourite rockin’ cities … Chicago.
This is my view on Wednesday evening … as the mists roll in from the lake … and the lights of the awesome Hancock Tower come on.
Amazing. It’s great to be back out here. I had fogotten how strongly it makes the blood flow in my veins.
and so it begins !
Let’s Rock, folks !
