Islands in Infinity: Galaxies 3-D

October 20, 2025 by admin

by Professor Derek Ward-Thompson and edited by Brian.

3-D pictures are the creation of J-P Metsävainio,

to be published by The London Stereoscopic Company,  Autumn 2025

With more than 200 colour photographs from the world’s great telescopes, both terrestrial and spaceborne, the stunning coffee table book, will provide a mesmerising introduction to the formation, nature, evolution and classification of some of the 200 billion galaxies that inhabit the observable Universe.

We’re taken on a journey, travelling through weird and wonderful shapes as great galaxies collide and merge in chaotic and extraordinarily forms. And, moving out towards the edge of the visible Universe, we examine how galaxies gather in clusters and superclusters as we look outwards and back in time towards the beginning of the Universe at the Big Bang.

Each copy comes complete with an Owl Stereoscopic Viewer, designed by Brian May which will bring the images to life in fantastic 3-D.

Welcome to the London Stereoscopic Company

The London Stereoscope (later ‘Stereoscopic’) Company was founded in 1854 to photograph, manufacture, and sell stereo views and viewers to a public enthralled by all things 3-D. Ten years later, the craze had subsided, and following a series of diversifications which kept it afloat, by the start of 1922 the company was dissolved.

[The History of the LSC link]

I acquired the shell of the London Stereoscopic Company (LSC) in 2005 with the aim of resurrecting it and sharing the joys of stereoscopy (3-D) with the world. Our mission would remain the same as it had been back in the 1850s ‘A Stereoscope in every Home’.

Nearly twenty years on, the LSC has grown into a successful international publishing company, issuing books and card sets of historic Victorian stereos from my collection, modern stereoscopic compilations, a range of 3-D space and astronomy titles, and the book I wrote about Queen featuring stereo photographs I have taken ever since the early 1970s when we initially got together. All this is supported by a wide range of the stereoscopes I designed to view the stereo photographs. We call them OWLs !

We have sold hundreds of thousands of our products, and the books have been translated into many languages ! In 2023, I passed my archive of more than 200,000 stereo photographs to the Nation as part of what is now known as the ‘Brian May Archive of Stereoscopy’ (BMAS), thus creating a permanent independent national centre of excellence for the study of stereoscopy. BMAS shares our research findings, provides information and gives talks, and sets a standard for identifying and appreciating these beautiful images.

For further information see [BMAS website link].

I hope you will get as much enjoyment as I have in the magical world of stereoscopy – our books, cards and viewers await you, and we also offer advice on how to take pictures yourself. Please do keep up to date with the latest releases by the LSC by becoming a friend of the LSC [link]. And let us know what you think of our wares by leaving a review in our online shop !

Bennu: Anatomy of an Asteroid

April 7, 2020 by admin

A THRILLING, FIRST EVER, STEREOSCOPIC  (3-D) EXPLORATION OF THE MOST HAZARDOUS ASTEROID – BENNU.

Bennu is the most dangerous asteroid in the Solar System and there is a real chance that it might strike the Earth in 2182.

In 2020 NASA’s OSIRISREx mission landed a spacecraft on Bennu and collected material from the surface for return to Earth. In September 2023 this material will arrive home and will be analysed in scientific labs worldwide – notably by scientists at London’s Natural History Museum. The results will help to answer some of our deepest questions such as: where did we come from, and what is our destiny in space. Stereo pictures of the asteroid compiled by Sir Brian May and his colleague Claudia Manzoni played a crucial role in selecting the landing site and mapping the asteroid.

Announcing Brian’s photography for sale as fine art prints for the first time

March 18, 2020 by admin

Brian May says “It’s been giving me great pleasure to share a chunk of my life’s work – combining some of the magic of Queen’s Glory Days with the alchemy of stereoscopy 3-D – on view every week day at London’s Proud Galleries.  Some of the 3-D images had been hiding in unmounted 35 mm film – rediscovered so many years later, and so evocative of those early days of Queen.  The unique ‘virtual reality’ of these in-depth views brings those wonderful, colourful early musical moments so vividly back to life. Out of our successful exhibition (and London’s first new stereoscopic shop for 170 years!) came the idea of offering a limited edition of high quality enlargement prints of some of those early images.”

Proud Galleries is pleased to announce a worldwide first in music photography with the introduction of a collection of work shot by the legendary stereo photographer Sir Brian May.

We are offering a rare opportunity for collectors to become a part of Queen’s history by acquiring a fine art print from Brian’s personally curated selection of candid behind-the-scenes, on-stage and portraiture images, which depict both the guitarist himself and lead singer Freddie Mercury, in an intriguing new light.

Unknown to many, Brian carried a stereo camera throughout Queen’s epic journey. Since the inception of the band (which he co-founded in the 1970’s) until the present day, Brian captured a whole history of intimate, playful and iconic images shot from the inside.
In addition, Proud Galleries, in collaboration with the London Stereoscopic Company, now offer you the chance to take home a fine art print of an iconic Victorian image from the Brian May Archive of Stereoscopy. This collection features an array of captivating Victorian photography, which communicates the excitement and beauty of stereoscopy during the 1800s.

Photography has been a life-long passion for Brian since his youth, and one of his greatest memories is helping his father develop and print black and white photographs in his spare bedroom. He was an avid student who went on to become an evangelist of stereo photography, and he continues to promote the visual magic of 3-D photography within the modern cultural narrative and as Founder of the London Stereoscopic Company in the 21st Century.

All Queen and Victorian fine art prints are selected and hand-signed by Sir Brian May, and are accompanied by a gallery certificate of authenticity, a Queen stereo card pack and a Lite Owl Viewer, designed by Brian.

Fine art prints available at Proud Galleries, 32 John Adam St, London WC2N 6BP
